Paul Ramirez Jonas and Creative Time present: Key to the City

Until June 27th, receiving a key to New York City is an attainable goal for any person—and unlike the keys heroes and visiting dignitaries are bestowed with, these actually open things. Artist Paul Ramírez Jonas and Creative Time have partnered with the city of New York to execute this public art project on a grand scale. To take part, simply go to the kiosk in Times Square, stand in line, and when your turn comes, present a key to the city to someone else—anyone else. Once armed with your key and its useful guidebook, you can proceed to any of the 24 Key to the City sites scattered across the five boroughs. Your key will open a number of things, from boxes on shelves to a PO Box to secret rooms in museums! If you haven't already become a part of the Key to the City public art project, you still have about a week and a half to get your key. Keys are handed out 7 days a week from 2-8pm (12-8pm on weekends) but get there before 6pm, since that's when they close down the line to ensure that everyone waiting will get a key. Key to the City locations will be open until September 6th.

Deitch's Adieu

Here are two more images from Jeffrey Deitch's May farewell dinner, where a slew of guests all bade the new director of LA MOCA adieu and wished him all the best. Deitch, of course, is at the heart of the photograph surrounded by his (familiar looking) friends and well-wishers.

Murakami at Versailles

Sneak Peek
Takashi Murakami is set to show an array of his sculptures at the iconic Chateau de Versailles in Paris. Murakami says, "So it is probable that the Versailles of my imagination corresponds to an exaggeration and a transformation in my mind so that it has become a kind of completely separate and unreal world. That is what I have tried to depict in this exhibition". The show runs from September 14th through December 12th.

Robert Longo and Bottega Veneta

Robert Longo, Untitled (1981)
We've just heard rumors that Robert Longo is involved in the campaign for Bottega Veneta's new collection. This should be fantastic.

Murakami World!

If you happen to find yourself in Venice on Wednesday, June 9th, stay put. François Pinault's Palazzo Grassi is organizing "Murakami World" in honor of the artist, and it is going to be three full days devoted to Japanese art in honor of the iconic artist. The program includes workshops that cover everything from manga to sushi, lectures and discussions, a happy hour, and of course, a discussion between Murakami himself and art historian Nubuo Tsuji. This discussion, From Nihonga to Superflat, will center around the fresco pictured above. Murakami created the above, titled 727-272 (The Emergence of God at the Reversal of Fate), for the Mapping the Studio exhibition at the François Pinault collection. Murakami World begins on Wednesday at 10:30 AM and continues until the Murakami/Tsuji discussion Friday afternoon at 4 PM.

Koons' Elephant

It seems that Koons' Elephant (2004) has found a home in Eugenio Lopez's garden in LA! It looks almost as if the elephant was made for the space.

Alexander McQueen Dresses to be Auctioned at Bonhams

Two Alexander McQueen dresses are to be auctioned off at Bonhams, Knightsbridge on June 30, as part of the Vision 21 sale. The dresses, some of the first to be auctioned off since McQueen's death in February, are from the designer's ready-to-wear collection for autumn/winter 2007. This particular collection was inspired by the Salem Witch trials of 1692—an event one of McQueen's ancestors was tragically involved in, being burnt at the stake. These two dresses, each one of a kind, are expected to be sold for £30,000.

The Face of Kanye's New Single: Provided by George Conde

Kanye West just released the artwork for his new single "Power" off of his album "Good Ass Job" scheduled for release this coming fall. The painting is by artist George Conde, who has been somewhat busy in the past few months! In addition to working with West, Conde has also recently collaborated with Adam Kimmel on Kimmel's fall/winter 2010 collection in which the designer sourced inspiration from the characters in Conde's paintings. Prosthetic artist Gabe Bartalos, known for his work with Matthew Barney, made masks of Conde's characters for a shoot of Kimmel's collection. The single, streaming now at Kanye's website, is due out on June 8th.
