Damien Hirst's "End of an Era" Exhibition

Saturday night at Gagosian the art world headed uptown for the opening of Damien Hirst's "End of an Era". Taking its name from the central sculpture, a severed bull's head with golden horns suspended in formaldehyde and encased in a golden vitrine, the show is on view through March 6th 2010. True to form the opening proved a star-studded affair with icons from all genres, from art to music and film. Spotlight: Tom's Sachs

Now featured for sale in the Gagosian Gallery's new retail venture on madison Avenue. The work of art costs $12,000 a piece and was produced in an edition of five. Sachs plays on the idea that the Hermes Kelly bag, also priced up to $12,000 in materials like lizard or ostrich skin, is "the holy grail of handbags." But he demotes its status by fashioning the bag from hardware store supplies, commenting on how our society values the name brand.

Anselm Reyle and Takashi Murakami Open at Gagosian Gallery Chelsea

Gagosian Gallery on West 24th Street was packed on Thursday night for the opening of a major show of Anselm Reyle's new works and an unveiling of Takashi Murakami's latest triptych painting. Berlin based artist Anselm Reyle's show is appropriately titled "Monochrome Age." His monumental sculptures with shiny, lacquered surfaces create vistas within the white cube of the gallery, reflecting its visitors and one another.
Takashi Murakami's 'Picture of Fate: I am but a fisherman who angles in the darkness of his mind' depicts the legend of the "China-lion" in his distinctive superflat style mixing American Pop with Japanese Anime and Otaku content.

Greedy for Vezzoli

GREED, A New Fragrance by Francesco Vezzoli, opened Friday, February 6th at Gagosian Gallery, Rome. The latest work by Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli was inspired by Duchamp's 1921 Belle Haleine: Eau de Voilette for which Duchamp altered a Rigaud perfume bottle appearing on the label as Rrose Sélavy, photographed by Man Ray. Not only does Vezzoli's bottle feature the artist in drag, as photographed by Francesco Scavullo, but Director Roman Polanski created a :60 spot for the mock-launch staring Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams. Smells like another winning collaboration. To view the video or for further details visit Gagosian's website.
