The New Museum Dazzles: Spring Gala 2011

Wednesday night, the New Museum celebrated their annual Spring Gala and after party with Interview Magazine at 7 World Trade Center in New York. This year’s honorees included influential artist duo Gilbert & George, as well as philanthropist and collector couple Stefan Edlis and Gael Neeson. The theme of the event was DAZZLE, and dazzle the art world did under custom Swarovski chandeliers of artist's designs! At the end of the night, $1.3 million was raised for the museum, with editions by Josh Smith selling out and the single auction item, a commission for four large format Polaroid portraits by Chuck Close, fetching $250,000 at the hammer of Tobias Meyer. Brazilian artist, Rivane Neuenschwander, is running a great exhibit at the New Museum in which the viewers can actually help create art. The artist has hired a forensic artist to sit down with visitors and sketch portraits of their exes as they describe them from memory.
